Weddings in Lewes
The desirable town of Lewes lies inside the heart of Sussex and is just the place to exchange your wedding vows, surrounded by chalk cliffs with the lure of the sea calling in the near distance. There’s much to see in the medieval streets and tiny alleyways (or twittens, as they are called in Sussex), since Lewes has a long and colourful past.
Lewes Castle keeps a watchful eye over the town and from its soaring towers you can appreciate breathtaking views from the rolling South Downs and the Weald to the Ashdown Forest, which is the most forested region in all of England. The castle gardens host a variety of events throughout the summer months bringing fun and laughter to the grounds. The magnificent Barbican Gateway still stands today and a short walk to the Barbican House Museum opposite, will unfold the story of Lewes.
William de Warenne, a friend of William the Conqueror, not only built the Norman Castle which dominates the town, but also founded the Priory of St. Pancras. The Priory, which once played a major part in the 1264 Battle of Lewes since it was occupied by the troops, is now a popular attraction with a memorial to the crusade beside it. Although it is fenced up to preserve the remains, tours can still be arranged.
Lewes is home to the handsome 16th century timber-framed house given to Anne of Cleves by her husband, King Henry VIII, as part of a divorce settlement. It is now a museum with a collection of Sussex pottery and an Elizabethan furnished bedroom and kitchen. This atmospheric house makes a fascinating visit with a display featuring Lewes from earlier time’s right up to the present, as well as a formal herb garden.
Lewes is famous for its annual Guy Fawkes Night. Thousands of visitors join in the celebrations where costumed locals parade down the streets holding burning torches and 17 crosses to also honour the 17 Protestant martyrs who burnt at the stake for their beliefs during the Marian persecutions.
Harvey’s Brewery, built on the banks of the tidal River Ouse in the 8th century, continues to this day to produce fine ales with various friendly pubs serving its award winning brew. Lewes is a foodie’s haven with restaurants offering a delicious choice of cuisine using locally produced food. Shopping is always a pleasure in the town, where you can find a range of small specialty shops, boutiques and an assortment of antique centres spotted everywhere.
